I Don't Understand How Emotions Work
"There is this lie at the heart of memoir that assumes we remember it the way it happened." - Khalid Warsame
Fury doesn't want to see a psychiatrist but no one will prescribe them testosterone without the appropriate paperwork. The process of getting diagnosed with gender dysphoria brings up a lot of feelings for them; shame, wrong-ness, resentment, heartbreak and, of course, fury.
"I Don't Understand How Emotions Work" is a graphic memoir that weaves straight forward dialogue with emotive imagery to mimic the drifting and coming-together of the conscious and subconscious; thought and emotion. It interrogates the notion of selfhood, asking the question: if who we are is constructed through our memories, what does that say about the integrity of our identities?
